M'Parany is 11 years old. He lives with his parents on a farm on the high plateaus of Madagascar. It’s time to harvest the rice, which is his family’s main source of food. Their neighbors all lend a hand, which makes the hard work in the rice paddies a whole lot easier. The rice plants have to be cut, collected and then beaten, to separate the grains of rice from the stalks. The grains and the stalks are then laid out to dry. M’Parany’s family keeps the rice for cooking, and the stalks are used to feed the animals. His family has a zebu, an ox, a cow, and a pig. They also have a handful of geese, which they’re fattening up. As soon as they’re ready, they’ll be sold at market or to the butcher.
